Interest builds for the auction of the Kaufmann House

By Dick Sakowicz | January 25, 2008

This is really an update to our November 28, 2007 blog on the Kaufmann House, here in Palm Springs. That blog was inspired by a New York Times article stating that the Kaufmann House, a true modern masterpiece, will be auctioned off on May 13th, at Christie’s New York, and not just as a property, but as a work of art.

Yesterday our local Desert Sun also ran a piece on the subject;  I find the new article intriguing because it provides new insights into just how much time, money and effort went into the five year restoration of this property. I mean. . . to reopen a rock quarry in Utah to get the exact sandstone “used in the exterior of the home and the fireplace” and to search the Sherwin Williams archives to get the exact color used in the original 1947 home – these are remarkable efforts!

If your interests lean toward Mid-Century architecture and design, revisit our first blog – The Kaufmann House (11-28-07)  where you will also find included a good link to the history of the house, along with lots of photos. Then read the Desert Sun follow up article -  The Kaufmann House (1-24-08) .
